Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body’s tissues. Edema is most common in arms and legs. Some ways to help relieve Edema are by raising your arm or leg above your heart for about 30 minutes three or four times a day and elevating the leg or arm while you sleep.
Reduce your salt and alcohol use. Wear compression stockings, sleeves, or gloves to help reduce the amount of fluid collecting in the tissues of the arm, hand, or leg. Use light massage working toward the heart.
The essential oils that you can use in your massage for Edema are Ginger, Cypress, and Lavender diluted in a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond Oil.
Edema may be temporary due to preganancy or a medication you are taking. It could be a result of an inflammation, infection, or injury. It can be related to a disease such as heart failure, kidney disease, or cirrhosis of the liver. It is very important to contact your doctor if your Edema continues for a long period. There are tests that can be performed to determine the cause of your Edema such as x-rays, ultrasounds, blood tests or urine analysis.
